Who’s in your five?

Apr 16, 2021

I trust this note finds you well! I’ve had some amazing conversations lately and I can’t wait to share them with you on the podcast. I learn so much during these interviews and it’s really becoming one of my favorite things to do. I’ll be publishing conversations with best-selling author, James Clear, soon (if you haven’t picked up Atomic Habits, you should). I also sat down with marketing guru, Jeff From; resiliency evangelist, Danny Bader; and a dynamic up and coming leader, Greg Rortvedt. These guys shared some great thoughts and lessons on many topics, including purpose, resiliency and ownership, just to name a few.

I also had some great non-podcast conversations this week and it got me thinking about the importance of surrounding yourself with inspiring people. My late friend, Scott Dinsmore, used to say this all the time, “You’re the avg of the 5 people you spend the most time with?” It’s a quote coined by Jim Rohn a long time ago and it’s timeless. Have you ever been weighed down by negative thinking? Or maybe you’ve struggled with someone close to you that complains all the time? Maybe it’s time you evaluate the people you surround yourself with. Now, I’m not saying cut everyone off. You can certainly have a hard (but meaningful) conversation with someone as long as you do it out of love and respect. The other option is to look add others to the mix. Who can you spend more time with that inspires and challenges you? Maybe you schedule a phone call or even better a lunch or coffee. It’s a good filter nonetheless – who’s in your top five?

Thanks for reading and enjoy your weekend!

P.S. Scott’s TED talk 8 years ago has over 6M views. He talks about doing work you love. He tragically died in a mountain-climbing accident a few years ago but his legacy lives on.
